Half Acre Brews Benefit ACLU, Garden Party with Avery and Forbidden Root

During Chicago Craft Beer Week, Jerry’s in Lincoln Square and Andersonville will partner with Half Acre Beer Company, Avery and Forbidden Root for two brew-centric events.

“Garden Party” in Andersonville
No need to pack away your Derby hats just yet! Jerry’s in Andersonville will hold a garden party on Tuesday, May 23. Starting at 6 p.m., guests may enjoy craft brews from Forbidden Root and Avery Brewing Company on the backyard patio. A bevy of botanical beers will be featured, including Forbidden Root’s Sublime Ginger ($8/12 oz), Tropical Toy Boat ($7.50/12oz), Fernetic ($8.50/8 oz), a TBD East Coast-style Pale Ale ($8/12 oz) and Avery’s Tangerine Quad, Raspberry Sour, Apricot Sour, Vanilla Bean Stout and Coconut Porter (all $10/8oz). Laura Von Brock from Avery Brewing Company and Kevin Fitchuk from Forbidden Root will be on hand to discuss their beer. The full dining menu will be available until 11 p.m.

“Grab a Cold Cat for a Cool Cause” in Lincoln Square
Jerry’s in Lincoln Square is partnering with Half Acre Beer Company to raise funds for the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. On Wednesday, May 24 starting at 6 p.m., event guests are invited to enjoy “Tiger and Alice” ($8, 12oz) or “Barrel-Aged Big Hugs” ($11/8oz) brews while supporting freedom, liberty, equality and justice for all within the United States. Jerry’s will also be pouring “Galactic Double Daisy Cutter” ($8.50/12oz) and the always quaffable Pony Pils ($6, pint). Eric Kapraun from Half Acre will be on hand to discuss the craft brew scene in Chicago. The evening will feature a raffle for Half Acre and Jerry’s swag (koozies, patches, pins, stickers, beer, a growler with a free fill, hat, shirt and Jerry’s gift certificates). 10% of all sales for the evening and 100% of raffle proceeds will be donated to the ACLU of Illinois. The full dining menu will be available until 11 p.m.

Mother’s Day Brunch at The Blanchard

Celebrate with Friends, Family and French Cuisine

The Blanchard, located in Lincoln Park, will welcome Mother’s Day celebrants with a special brunch menu on Sunday, May 14. Executive Chef Ryan Burns has crafted a menu with sweet and savory French brasserie-inspired favorites, from Outhier (creamy scrambled egg, chive, vodka spiked creme fraiche, royal ossetra caviar) and Stone Fruits Salade (marcona almond, coriander, basil and chive, vindaloo compressed cucumber) to Croque Madame (smoked Nueske’s ham, fromage gruyere, fried egg, sauce morney brulee) and Steak Frites (8-oz. hanger steak, oyster mayonnaise, charred chicory). Bar Roma will welcome Mother’s Day celebrants for a festive midday meal in Andersonville on Sunday, May 14. In addition to the restaurant’s regular brunch menu, executive chef Fred Ramos will offer an array of specials including: asparagus and prosciutto salad; colossal shrimp cocktail; wild mushroom omelette; house made ricotta gnocchi; and dark chocolate cake (detailed below). Cinco de Derby Weekend at Timothy O’Toole’s Pub

Timothy O’Toole’s Pub, located in Streeterville, will offer two days of celebratory specials for Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby. 

Starting on Friday, May 5, say “ole!” to the fifth of May with $5 Modelo drafts, O’Toole’s Signature Margarita made with Casa Noble Crystal $7, Perfect Patron Margarita featuring Patron Citronge and Reposado $8, Perfect Patron Margarita created with Patron Citronge and Roca Silver $9, Patron Flight (Anejo, Reposado and Roca Silver, $18) and Prickly Pear Margarita with Casamigos Blanco, $7. Chef Corey Grupe’s menu features such festive fare as pulled pork nachos, ancho chili grilled fish tacos, chicken torta, southwest salad and a Mexican rice bowl.

The following day (Saturday, May 6), the subterranean sports bar will get into the Derby Day spirit with $5.50 12 oz. drafts of Stella served in keepsake etched glassware and $6.50 Woodford Reserve Mint Juleps, also served in keepsake etched glassware (while supplies last). The 143rd Kentucky Derby will be shown on over 70 screens, including a massive 110″ HD TV, at 5:34 p.m.

Kentucky Derby Specials at Jerry’s Sandwiches

Saturday, May 6
Jerry’s is off to the races! In celebration of Derby Day (May 6), the Lincoln Square and Andersonville locations will serve Kentucky Hot Brown sandwiches (turkey, Mornay cheese sauce, bacon, tomato on challah) for $13.50. In addition, the restaurants will feature Mint Julep cocktails ($10 each) and offer $1 off all Kentucky bourbons, all day. The bourbon menu, curated by certified Kentucky Colonel Trey Elder, may be viewed here.

“Jockeys and Juleps” at The Blanchard

Derby Day Fete Set in Lincoln Park

The Blanchard, which loosely translates to “white horse” in French, will hold a fun “Jockey and Juleps” fete for Derby Day. On Saturday, May 6, party guests are encouraged to don their finest southern attire and chapeaus as the Kentucky Derby airs at 5:34 p.m. in the lounge. Two of the best dressed race enthusiasts will receive a $100 dining certificate, one awarded for clothing and one for best hat.

A Derby Day soiree would not be complete without bourbon cocktails. Beverage consultant Michael Simon (Acadia; the Wit; Celeste) has created a Sweet Tea Julep made with Old Forester signature bourbon, sweet tea reduction, peach and mint ($14). Executive Chef Ryan Burns will offer items from the new bar menu including Hudson Valley Foie Gras (roasted; black truffle crusted; marbled torchon; rase), shareable snacks (toast and marrow; chick pea fries; escargot; duck rillettes) and entrees (Blanchard burger; steak frites; dover sole).

III Forks Prime Steakhouse, located in Lakeshore East, will hold a “Sommelier for a Day” wine tasting on Wednesday, May 3. Hooray for the fifth of May! On Friday, May 5, Tallboy Taco will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with an array of festive food and drink specials.
