Cantina Laredo in River North will offer a modern Mexican midday meal on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 14) from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chef Cruz Almanza’s brunch dishes, outlined below, include Crab Cake Benedict; Chicken Fajita Omelet; Huevos Rancheros; French Toast served with Mexican brandy butter; Chilaquiles; Spinach & Artichoke Omelet; Asada y Huevos; and more. As an added bonus, all brunch entrees are served with a complimentary mimosa, bloody maria or non-alcoholic beverage.

The Blanchard, which loosely translates to “white horse” in French, will hold a fun “Jockey and Juleps” fete for Derby Day. On Saturday, May 6, party guests are encouraged to don their finest southern attire and chapeaus as the Kentucky Derby airs at 5:34 p.m. in the lounge. Two of the best dressed race enthusiasts will receive a $100 dining certificate, one awarded for clothing and one for best hat.
A Derby Day soiree would not be complete without bourbon cocktails. Beverage consultant Michael Simon (Acadia; the Wit; Celeste) has created a Sweet Tea Julep made with Old Forester signature bourbon, sweet tea reduction, peach and mint ($14). Executive Chef Ryan Burns will offer items from the new bar menu including Hudson Valley Foie Gras (roasted; black truffle crusted; marbled torchon; rase), shareable snacks (toast and marrow; chick pea fries; escargot; duck rillettes) and entrees (Blanchard burger; steak frites; dover sole).
The Blanchard will open early at 3 p.m. for the Kentucky Derby party.

4 p.m.-midnight …and they’re off (to the rooftop)! On Saturday, May 6, III Forks will host their annual Derby Day soiree, which also kicks off patio season on the steakhouse’s spacious rooftop lounge. The event starts at 4 p.m. and party goers are encouraged to don their best seersucker suit, buff up the white bucks and choose a most fabulous chapeau for the occasion. A “Win, Place, Show” raffle will be held for dining gift certificates and other prizes.
The Kentucky Derby race will be shown on multiple outdoor television screens. III Forks’ rooftop lounge offers plentiful seating, cabanas with built-in heaters, stone and glass fireplaces and stunning views of the city and park.

Hooray for the fifth of May! On Friday, May 5, Tallboy Taco will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with an array of festive food and drink specials. From 5-7 p.m., the River North taqueria will feature classic Margaritas, spicy Palomas and “Mi Casa Su Casa” cocktails for $8 each (regularly $11; detailed below). For tequila purists, an Avion tequila flight will be offered for $15 and Avion Blanco and Casamigo Blanco shots will be $10, all day.
